The Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral Choir serves as the Cathedral’s Principal Choir, singing year-round at the Sunday 11:15am Mass and another 30 times during the year for numerous Feast Days, Diocesan Liturgies and concerts. Repertoire includes a wide range of historical, contemporary and multiethnic music. The Cathedral Choir has performed such masterpieces as Bruckner’s Te Deum, Requiems of Mozart, Duruflé and Fauré, and Lou Harrison’s Mass for Saint Anthony.

In addition to special concerts, in the spring of each year the Cathedral Choir and Girls Chorus present a concert for Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival. The concerts feature new music and premieres. Recent performances include music of John Tavener, Michael McGlynn, Henryk Gorecki, Arvo Pärt, Morton Laurdisen, Eric Whitacre and Olivier Messiaen. They have also performed two large scale works by music director, Mark Thomas: In the Land of the Living for tenor and oboe soloists with chorus, strings and harp, and his 30-minute Te Deum for two choirs, mandolin, marimba, percussion and chamber orchestra.

In November 2006 the Cathedral Choir returned to Italy to sing again at San Ignacio in Rome and Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, as well as at San Marco in Venice. Their CD Oratio is available through order on this web site or through Pauline Books & Media in Charleston. A second CD release is forthcoming.
